Tinder Launches Anti-Loneliness Campaign in Sweden

Throughout December, Tinder users in Sweden will see in-app information about how to counteract involuntary loneliness and support non-profits with helplines. Surveys found that one out of every four Swedes experience loneliness during Christmas and New Year.

Tinder users in Sweden this month will come across a Swipe Card that directs users to visit the website of Jourhavande Medmänniska, a non-profit organisation that provides helplines for those who need someone to talk to.

These users will be able to find out more about counteracting loneliness, and explore opportunities to volunteer for the helplines and support the non-profit’s ongoing efforts.

A survey commissioned by Tinder and Jourhavande Medmänniska found that one in four Swedes experience loneliness during the winter period, with common reasons being that they don’t have family closeby or they don’t have plans.

Women aged between 35 – 49 felt lonely to the greatest extent during Christmas and New Year, the survey discovered.

“By harnessing the power of Tinder, we want to support Jourhavande Medmänniska’s work to shine a light on those who are lonely, especially as we head into the Christmas holidays”, said Elin Sivard, Communications Manager at Tinder in the Nordics.

“We hope that with the collaboration between Tinder and Jourhavande Medmännniska, we can encourage Tinder users to find out more about how they can volunteer to reduce loneliness, as well as share advice to support those experiencing loneliness. No one should ever have to feel alone”, she added.

Speaking about the need for volunteers, the chairman of Jourhavande Medmänniska stated “Not everyone knows we exist. At the same time, the need for more volunteers is great. Close to 100,000 calls are made to us per year and our resources have difficulty meeting the demand”.

The non-profit shared tips for how individuals can show care and create community bonds with those around them:

  • Ask people around you how they are doing, and make sure to take the time to listen to the answer.
  • Even short conversations with a neighbor can make a big impact
  • Check in with friends you haven’t seen in a while.
  • If you yourself feel alone – allow yourself to process the feelings, but do not hesitate to reach out, for example to someone close to you or to helping organisations such as Jourhavande Medmänniska.
